Contact The History of the Folding Bike There have been many who have laid claim to the invention of the folding bike. Humorously, a bike manufacturer who shall remain nameless so as to not unduly embarrass them audaciously claims on their website to have produced the world’s first folding bike in Wishful thinking by their marketing department I suppose. The truth is that the folding bike has been around for considerably longer than one might imagine and most claims of being the first are erroneous.

First things first though, you can’t have a folding bike without the invention of the bicycle itself. So a very short history lesson on the bicycle is in order. Here again we have some disputed claims of invention and historians will probably never be able to identify the exact moment of invention. For a while some had claimed that Leonardo Da Vinci invented the bicycle based on a sketch found in his Codex Atlanticus.

However, this sketch was later determined to be a forgery, though many historical accounts written before this forgery was discovered still credit Da Vinci as the inventor of the bicycle. There were a few “pre-bicycles” invented before the appearance of what one would recognize as a bicycle. The first of these was probably the “Celerifere” developed by a French count named Mede de Sivrac in

Some bike parts have a date code cast or stamped into the piece. This clearly is when the component was made and not when the bike was made, but unless the component or bike manufacturer had lots of stock lying around in inventory, the date should be a fairly good indication of the year of the bike. At least it would be the earliest date that the bike could have been made. Of course, all this assumes the bike has the original component. The most likely components to be original are the stem, handlebars, seatpost, and brakes.

On a vintage bike in excellent condition that apparently had a lonely existence in a garage all of the components likely are original. As the wear on a vintage bike increases, the greater the likelihood components are not original, either through replacement of worn parts or through component swaps. Swaps can take place early in the life of a bike as the proud new owner upgrades to new or used components of higher quality.

Swaps also can be made as the bike falls out of favor, or is being sold, where the higher quality components are traded for lower quality ones that the owner had onhand. Don’t all cyclists have boxes and boxes of old components in their garage? Most early Treks through about were sold as framesets. The components were added by the local bike shop or by the buyer.

The streamliner tipped over when it passed over a rut in the track as it was being towed to the start line. Triumph said rain meant it was not possible to create the required-consistency across the mile course necessary to undertake the attempt. A mile into the run the machine lost traction on the damp surface, veering off the steered path and tipping over on the course. Martin was confirmed to be “completely uninjured” and the record attempt was postponed once more.

While racing, there is just one rule: You can’t be clever. Even if you find out that it’s truly your day, that you don’t feel the chain, that you’re going like a motorcycle. To give is never a mistake. Give so that something or someone will give back. And if you give, you’ll sleep well at night.

Production had reached a staggering 62, bicycles a year After World War II, Raleigh became known for its lightweight sports roadster bicycles, often using Sturmey-Archer three and five-speed transmissions. These cycles were considerably lighter and quicker than either the old heavy English utility roadster or the American cruiser bikes. In the late s Schwinn and other US cycle makers had discovered the grassroots Californian trend towards high-rise cycles for teens and were capitalizing on it.

Responding to this, the Raleigh Chopper was first available for sale in North America as a children’s bicycle. The Chopper featured a 3-speed Sturmey-Archer gear hub, shifted using a top-tube mounted gear lever reminiscent of the early Harley-Davidson. Other differences were the unusual frame, long padded seat with backrest, sprung suspension at the back, high-rise handlebars, and differently sized front 16″ and rear 20″ wheels. It was too expensive and too late for the North American market but the following year it was released in the UK where it was hugely successful.

Thursday, April 5, – However, when you ride a premium e-bike like the Raleigh Mustang Comp Electric the difference quickly becomes clear. Is the difference enough to justify the extra outlay? You can see on the handlebar display how much assistance you are getting within the chosen setting, with a bar that fills up as the motor provides more. As well as making the ride smoother, this variable assistance can extend the battery range. The impressive range I experienced on the Mustang Comp Electric certainly suggested that it was not wasting a single watt.

I rolled through the km mark easily, riding mostly in eco and normal, with one 10km journey ridden in high throughout because it was raining and I was late. If you stay in high assistance mode the whole time, the battery life is listed at 40km, but I found that high was rarely, if ever, needed when riding in the city. The range is not only convenient because you have to charge it less, it also makes the Mustang a great bike for touring or heading off-road, where you do want to be able to use the high assist mode for uphills without fearing that your battery will run out.

You move the shifter which is behind the right-hand brake one click to the left to change up, and two clicks to change down. You also have three buttons:

’74 Raleigh Tourist

Hello and Welcome, About a month ago a friend asked me if I would be interested in restoring his son’s vintage mountain bike. I had already seen the bike and remembered thinking it sure would clean up nice with that chrome frame. So of course I said yes. Rust on chrome does not photograph well. So you will have to trust me on this one, the surface rust was everywhere. Here I had stuck one of my salvaged wheels on the front but soon decided not to use it.

For the heritage poster, Raleigh wanted to focus on a grand cityscape incorporating a sense of urban adventure and exploration. What I loved about this concept was it afforded us the opportunity to showcase the freedom of discovery that comes with having a bike.

Seat lug serial number, mens’ Seat lug serial number, ladies’ Dropout serial number, Super Course and Grand Prix Alternate serial system shown Serial convention: At present, I have insufficent information about the serial numbers from this era to construct a definite chart of every example used during this time period. At least 4 or 5 different systems were used. I have uncovered two of them to a reasonable extent; both of which ran concurrently to each other during this time period: This system showed its face in I have named it accordingly , and was phased out in mid Evidence indicates that a handful of ‘ ’71 frames – or their lugs, depending on when the stamping was done – may not have been released from the factory until , and were consequently decaled as models.

This is the only explanation I can suggest regarding this issue. This system never exeeded 6 digits, and the reason for its introduction remains a mystery. Regardless, it is here, and it will stay. The serials from this era, specifically for general production machines Sports, Superbe, Sprite , will be located on the seat lug. Unknown where they are located on DL-1s. Keep in mind that the serials used for Raleigh Choppers – while apparently a nearly identical 7-digit system – do not corrispond well with those of the larger bicycles.
